Archaeological findings show that remnants along the beach ridge in Unalakleet date back to 200 B.C. to 300 A.D. The name Unalakleet, meaning "from the southern side," reflects its location on Norton Sound. This vibrant community serves as a hub for fishing, hunting, and transportation in western Alaska. Its rich history is deeply connected to the Unaligmiut people, an Inupiat group renowned for their maritime skills. Salmon and other fish are central to subsistence living, alongside hunting and berry gathering. Unalakleet is a checkpoint for the world-famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
