ABOUT

Togiak Store & Community

In 1880, "Old Togiak," or "Togiagamute," was located across the bay, but heavy winter snow made wood-gathering difficult. Over time, residents moved to the opposite shore where resources were more accessible. After the 1918-19 influenza epidemic, many from the Yukon-Kuskokwim region also relocated to the Togiak area. Fishing, especially for salmon and herring, is a cornerstone of the local economy and diet. Residents also hunt moose, seals, and waterfowl, and gather berries in the surrounding tundra. The village is a gateway to Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and outdoor recreation.
