St. Michael is located on the east coast of St. Michael Island in Norton Sound. Redoubt St. Michael, the original trading post, was built in 1833 by the Russian-American Company. The village is home to Yup’ik and Iñupiat people who continue to rely on fishing, hunting, and gathering for their livelihood. Salmon, seals, and waterfowl are important resources. The coastal location provides opportunities for fishing and exploring the natural environment.
