Metlakatla was founded in 1887, and its namesake comes from Maxłaxaała, a Tsimshian word meaning "saltwater passage where the wind dies down." Nestled on Annette Island in the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, Metlakatla stands proud as the only Indian Reserve in the entire state. The Reserve is 20 miles south of Ketchikan and is typically reached by seaplane, boat, or ferry. The local economy thrives mainly on fishing, seafood processing, and tourism.
