Anaktuvuk Pass, nestled in the Brooks Range, is the northernmost community of the Nunamiut or inland Inupiat people. Situated at the divide between the Anaktuvuk and John Rivers, it became a permanent settlement in the mid-20th century as the historically nomadic Nunamiut chose to preserve their hunting traditions and cultural heritage. The area is renowned for its caribou migrations, which remain central to the community’s subsistence practices. Visitors can explore the cultural history at the Simon Paneak Memorial Museum, which showcases Nunamiut heritage. Located within Gates of the Arctic National Park, the surrounding mountains and valleys offer hiking and photography opportunities.
