Yakutat, meaning “the place where the canoes rest,” is situated along the Gulf of Alaska. This vibrant fishing community is renowned for its salmon and halibut fisheries and has deep roots in Tlingit culture. In 1805, the Russian-American Company established a fort in Yakutat to harvest sea otter pelts. Later, in 1884, the Alaska Commercial Company opened a store in the area, marking another chapter in Yakutat's rich history.
