Nuiqsut, one of three abandoned Inupiat villages recognized in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, was resettled in 1973 by 27 families from Barrow. Federal agencies constructed housing and facilities during the summers of 1973 and 1974. Residents rely on fishing, hunting, and gathering, with caribou and fish being key resources. Nuiqsut’s location near the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge offers opportunities to explore remote wilderness areas. The village remains deeply connected to the land and its resources.
