ABOUT

Gambell Store & Community

Gambell, situated on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, is home to both Alaskan and Siberian Yup'ik Eskimos. Reindeer were introduced to the area in 1900, and a few years later, President Theodore Roosevelt established a reindeer reservation for local use. Gambell is known for its whaling and walrus hunting traditions, which are essential to the community’s subsistence lifestyle. The area is a hotspot for birdwatchers, particularly during migration seasons. Gambell’s archaeological sites reveal centuries of human history, connecting past and present.
